IVF and emla®
You can ease some of the distress and pain of your treatment.1
Receiving IVF treatment can be a stressful time for you and your partner,
dealing with at times painful or uncomfortable procedures. For women who are afraid of needles there is a way to at least ease the pain from the series of needles
required for IVF.
emla® is an anaesthetic patch, that is applied to the skin prior to procedures such as needles, to prevent pain. It works by numbing the skin so that needles and minor skin
surgery procedures can be performed without pain.1
emla® is well tolerated and easy to use and it can be applied at home. Apply the patch at least one hour prior to procedures and it can be left in place for up to five hours for adults. The longer the patch stays on, the better the anaesthetic effect.2
emla® was the world’s first skin anaesthetic and is currently the world market leader.3 To date, more than 200 million people worldwide have been effectively treated with emla®.4
In Australia, emla® has been successfully used throughout hospitals since 1988.5
How to use emla® for IVF

Make sure that the area of the skin to be anaesthetised is clean and dry,
e.g. remove any make-up. Bend back the aluminium backing of the
emla® patch at the exposed corner, and separate it from the patch.
Do not touch the round white pad in the centre that contains emla®.

Apply the patch to the skin, pressing firmly around the edges to ensure good adhesion. Do not press the centre of the patch. This may squeeze the emulsion out under the adhesive.
Write the time of application onto the dressing. emla® must be applied at least one hour before the procedure and can be left in place for up to five hours for adults. The longer the patch stays on, the better the anaesthetic effect.
